Tennozan (Emperor Mountain)

      Surrounded by traquil rice fields, Tennōzan, or Emperor Mountain, reaches a height of 56.7 meters. The mountain is named after Emperor Antoku (1178-1185), who is said to have fleed to the mountain after the Taira clan were defeated by the Minamoto clan at the battle of Dan-no-ura during the Genpei War (1180 -1185). According to popular tradition, Emperor Antoku built a palace on the mountain, and today a shinto shrine dedicated to the god Inari can be found on the mountain top.
